What if My Dog Runs Out of Food?

If your dog runs out of food during their stay, we offer the choice of either Carna4 - Duck or Lamb recipe or K9 Kravings Complete Raw - Beef or Turkey Recipe. These are two trusted brands with known quality ingredients and are least likely to cause any allergic reactions.

**There will be a $5 charge per meal.**

What else do I need to provide?

We are fully equipped to take care of all your dog’s needs. We provide an elevated cot in each room. We also have stainless steel bowls, leashes, toys, beds, and blankets. We do suggest for boarding that you send your dog with their favorite toy, bed/blanket, and a dirty shirt that has your scent on it.

If your dog needs a slow feeder or raised bowl you need to provide that as well.

How to Calculate Your Dog`s Stay

We first count nights then days. If your dog is staying with us for 4 “days”, that would be counted as three Over Nights at $45 and one Day Care at $35, equaling $170.

**No daycare charge if you pick-up BEFORE 9:30am**

What if I am late picking up?

We are very understanding that life does not always go to plan. We also realize that our secluded location can make travel a little slower. We state that our last pick-up is at 7 pm. We allow some grace so long as you keep us informed of your delay. However, after 8 pm with no communication, will be counted as an overnight stay. At which point you will have to pick up your dog the following day.

What if I feed a raw/frozen food and like to add supplements to my dog’s meal?

Great! We feed our dogs a raw diet. We have plenty of room to store your dog`s frozen meals and we are used to prepping/thawing raw foods. MVK is here to provide quality and individualized care. If your dog is on a particular diet with added supplements, so long as you provide those supplements, you can be sure your dog is getting them as directed.

I am looking for a trainer. Do you have any recommendations?

While there are many good trainers in the Northern Virginia area, I first and foremost recommend Ridgeside K9. Their head office is located in Winchester but they service all of NOVA into Maryland and Baltimore. We believe in their methods. Just ask any of their clients to hear raving reviews

**MVK is not affiliated with Ridgeside K9**

Alternatively, Good Dog Workshop headquartered in Warrenton is an excellent natural dog trainer. They follow a Caesar Milan approach. They use several different methods and strongly believe in helping you better understand your dog and how dogs think.

Is MVK Right For Me?

Usually, the answer is 100% YES. However, if your dog needs to play with other dogs in group play, then MVK may not be right for them. Because we cater to dogs that are often not dog-friendly, very shy, or elderly, and because we are a small facility, we do not have big play groups. Your dog will have lots of attention and activity, but playtime with other dogs is not guaranteed.

Rest in Peace Kane

Kane was one of the first dogs to board at MVK. We honor him and the love that he gave his family by memorializing the magnificent dog here.

What To Expect After Boarding With MVK

My Dog Is Acting Hungrier than Usual; Did They Eat While Staying At MVK?

One of the most common things when a dog first returns home after boarding is that they are eating much more than usual. If They seem ravenous for the first few days after coming home, don’t worry. It doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong nor that she didn’t eat while staying with MVK. Instead, this increased hunger is usually attributed to different things.

Dogs tend to work up a significant appetite when they are boarded, and this is because they spend much time exercising and playing. They need extra calories to refuel their bodies. However, since dogs naturally seem to eat less when boarding, often just due to being less comfortable eating in unfamiliar surroundings, it is very common for canines to play catch-up when they arrive home. Speak to your veterinarian if your dog’s appetite doesn’t settle in a few days.

My Dog Seems Particularly Thirsty; Do I Need to Be Concerned?

Like added hunger, many owners report that their dogs drink more during the first few days back home. Again, this is almost certainly because they feel more comfortable drinking at home than in strange surroundings. However, in some circumstances, this can be to do with your dog preferring the taste of the water you offer over the water given here.

My Dog Is Sleeping a Lot. Are They Ok?

If a boarding facility does a good job of taking care of your dog, they will almost certainly come home feeling worn out! You don’t want to go away and leave them in a kennel that will essentially leave them to their own devices. Instead, you want to be sure they are kept busy so that they remain healthy and not focused on being apart from you. Any reputable kennel will spend a great deal of time exercising and playing with your dog, so they are physically and cognitively stimulated and don’t become bored and restless. As a result, they may need to sleep more when they get home! If they still seem unusually lethargic after a couple of days, it is worth speaking to your veterinarian to rule out any underlying illness.

My Dog Has Had Diarrhea Since They Got Home. Do I Need to Take Them to the Vet?

Have you ever had an upset tummy because of fear, anxiety, or excitement? A similar phenomenon can affect our pets too. If your dog has diarrhea while in our care, you will be notified immediately; however, when they first return home, this could be due to the flood of emotions they will be feeling. It is very unlikely that they have picked up a stomach virus or anything while in kennels since MVK is fastidious both in ensuring animals are suitably vaccinated and in our standards of cleanliness. Nevertheless, if your dog has diarrhea for more than 48 hours, it is important to schedule an appointment with your vet to rule out the underlying illness.

If they have diarrhea and aren’t drinking, see your vet immediately.

My Dog Seems Abnormally Clingy. What Can I Do to Help Them?

Many pets suffer from mild separation anxiety when temporarily out of contact with their owner. As a result, clingy behavior when you are first reunited is normal and to be expected. Nevertheless, you can help manage this and ease them back into their habitual, well-adjusted self by slipping back into your usual routine as quickly as possible. This will help to re-establish familiarity and help them feel secure.
